Organization Profile

Purpose:

  • to promote, encourage, and develop recreational and competitive sports activities for the deaf and hard of hearing people in the Province of Alberta
  • to encourage members to develop and increase skills to compete with others in their amateur recreation and sports competitions at local, provincial and/or international levels
  • to assume the responsibilities of hosting provincial, national and/or international sports tournaments
  • to formulate policies consistent with these aforementioned objectives

History

This non-profit organization was originally called the Federation of Silent Sports of Alberta, it was incorporated in Edmonton, Alberta with eight charter members, on December 3, 1974.

The name, Federation of Silent Sports of Alberta, was changed to Alberta Deaf Sports Association on May 22, 1984.  This name change reflected the decision made by the national deaf sports and other provincial deaf sports associations to delete the term Federation, since it was not commonly used in reference to such type of organization.

Deaf and Hard of Hearing people of all ages are encouraged to maintain active participation in sports as well as serve as a part of the administration, to assist with the development of programs, and/or the maintenance of the association. Youngsters are encouraged to reach their potential in sports and to achieve outstanding performances while representing Alberta or/and Canada in national or international competitive sports.

There are three affiliated regions serving the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in Alberta : North, Central and South. Individuals in other towns where there are no sport clubs for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing can still be members in order to compete in provincial, regional, and national tournaments. As the Deaf and Hard of Hearing population increases in a local region, a sport association/club can be formed and affiliated with ADSA which leads to automatic affiliation with the Canadian Deaf Sport Association. All clubs may host provincial and national sport tournaments and formulate policies consistent with ADSA's objectives.
